Why Grace Works

What is it about grace? Why does it “work?”

I’m tempted to say grace motivates because everyone wants to go to heaven when he dies. But surely grace is more than celestial life insurance.

I am also inclined to believe grace entices us through the promise of spiritual riches. But this seems just as shortsighted as the environmental perspective.

If living in a nice place provided ultimate fulfillment, the folks living in Fort Worth—or Bozeman—should be happier than the folks who don’t. But such is not the case. Location and environment are not profound enough to explain grace’s motivation.

If spiritual wealth was an adequate explanation for grace’s compulsion then church attendance would be up instead of down. Grace is more compelling than environment and grander than wealth.
