Lions

I’m musing over a phrase I read from David. He writes, “My soul is among lions” (Ps. 57:4a). Been there before?

Or maybe, there now?

David quickly follows the realization of his soul being among lions with the words of his soul’s resolve: “Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory be above all the earth. My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!” (vss. 5,7).

I don’t know what setting David’s metaphor takes you to, but for me I see a pride of lions on the Serengeti. Everything I consider of importance and value—including yours truly—is in the midst of the pride anxious about their next whim.

“My soul is among lions!”

Hmm. Cats are elegant killers, you know.

As fear stalks me through the grasses, I am reminded of Who holds my days in His hands. My soul isn’t to be cowering on the plains of my heart, at least not according to this journal note from David.

Nope. Strike up the band! “Be exalted above the heavens O God.” Strip off this sorry, safari camouflage and put on something glorious!

If it weren’t David and the inspired Scripture you were seeking to emulate, you would think yourself mad—like the demented soul who jumped into the tiger confines at the zoo.

“Let your glory be above all the earth,” David journals.

The take away for me—in my surrounded condition?

My heart is steadfast. I have resolved to praise God. I have determined to sing praises. He can handle this collection of killers through me.

But still. What are you supposed to do when you are being stalked by lions?

More on that in my next note to you.
